SEE YOUTUBE VIDEO - CLICK HEREIn this video Wizards of the Coast VP of Sales Scott Knoblich explains the Helvault, an obelisk-like box that is the centerpiece of WotC's innovative Avacyn Restored Pre-Release Events that will be held at hobby game stores beginning on April 28th and 29th leading up to the release of the final Innistrad set of Magic: The Gathering cards on May 4th. Knoblich answers common questions about the Helvault and provides numerous tips on how retailers can run the best possible pre-release event. The mysterious Helvault is covered with seals. During the Avacyn Restored Pre-Release Event, whenever players earn achievements, a seal is broken. When all the seals are broken, the Helvault is opened and all the players at the event will receive a share of its contents, whatever they may be (see "Helvault for 'Avacyn Restored'" for more details on the Avacyn Restored Pre-Release Events)....

Konami Digital Entertainment's VP of Card Business Yumi Hoashi talked to ICv2 at the recent GAMA trade show about the new Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game hobby exclusive release, Yu-Gi-Oh! Gold Series: Haunted Mine, which goes on sale on June 12th, 2012. "We are going back to what we did for the initial Gold Series, Series 1, 2 and 3, but we are also introducing a new technology called the "Gold Ghost Hybrid." It will be a hybrid between the "Gold Rares," which we introduced in the Gold Series for the first time, and the "Ghost Rares," so it will have the 3-D holographic image of the card art (from the "Ghost Rares"), and then it will have the "Gold Rare" technology on the rest of the card, so the card frame will be gold and the card text will be gold as well." Each 25-card YGO: TCG Gold Series: Haunted Mine pack will contain 25 cards. Each pack will contain two "Gold Rare" cards and one "Gold Ghost Hybrid" card along with 22 common cards. Aside from the Gold Series, the "Gold Rare: cards are found only in the boosters, and then maybe just one per case, so the new Gold Series: Haunted Mine release provides duelists with a great opportunity to acquire some very rare cards.Konami's Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game remains the #2 collectible game in the Hobby Channel according to the most recent ICv2 survey of the "Top Collectible Games" (see "Top Collectible Games-Q4, 2011")....

At the GAMA trade show Days of Wonder has announced the July North American release of the Small World Realms Expansion a major expansion to the Small World board game universe that can be played with either the original Small World board game or Small World Underground, the complete game follow-up that was released in 2011. Small World Realms includes numerous puzzle-like Terrain regions that can be assembled into variously sized and shaped board maps. Map designs can be based on any of the 12 preset scenarios created by the game's designer Philippe Keyaerts, but in addition to conquering those, players can combine the Terrain pieces to create their own custom maps and scenarios. The deluxe Small World Realms Expansion box includes 26 Geomorphic Hex-shaped Terrain tiles featuring three regions each, along with 12 mountain tiles, 6 chasms, 4 peaks, 1 game turn marker and track, 12 tunnels, 10 victory coin mines, 6 river border markers, 1 rusted throne, and 7 additional tokens that can be used for custom scenarios....

Wizards of the Coast has announced the May 4th release of Magic the Gathering: Avacyn Restored, the third and final set of the Innistrad block--and it appears that WotC's big spring release could turn out to be quite different in some important regards from its predecessors in the Innistrad block (Innistrad and Dark Ascension). Pre-release events for the 244-card Avacyn Restored set will take place on April 28th and 29th. At 244 cards Avacyn Restored qualifies as a large set and appears at first glance to be similar to the Zendikar block's Rise of the Eldrazi. Some insiders feel that the Avacyn set could include some very different mechanics than seen in Innistrad and Dark Ascension in much the same way that the mechanics in Eldrazi differed from those in the other sets in the Zendikar block. One clue that Avacyn Restored could be quite different was revealed in a tweet from Mark Rosewater, one of the set's design team, who announced: "Let me set the record straight Dark Ascension will have cool ‘dual face' cards, but Avacyn Restored will not have any ‘dual-faced' cards." Rosewater did indicate that "We are doing things to connect Avacyn Restored to Innistrad and Dark Ascension, but ‘dual face' cards didn't make sense with what happens in Avacyn Restored. I can't explain why yet." WotC has released some arresting image from Avacyn Restored, which appears to show the archangel Avacyn appearing at what looks like a village in Innistrad. What plans does he have in mind--will he drive out Sorin and his vampiric cohorts from Dark Ascension? Guess we will have to wait until April to find out...

WizKids has announced the second expansion for its popular dice-building game Quarriors!: Quarmageddon. The Quarmageddon expansion features 40 new custom dice, two new spells and six new creatures: the Barbarian Gnome, Mischievous Imp, Voodoo Doll, Lord of the Quarry, Heavenly Seraph and Troll Behemoth. Some of the creatures have a brand new "immunity" ability that makes them immune to spell effects or creature abilities - even though they can still be damaged in combat. This expansion also features a revised rulebook that has a few updates; such as adding a new "Spent Pile" area and combining the Drawing/Readying and Rolling phases into one phase. The new expansion also includes playmats and a storage box for all the Quarriors! dice to date, including expansions. Quarriors! (see WizKids Launches Dice Building Game) has seen almost immediate success jumping to third on the list of top Card/Building Games (see Top Ten Card/Building Games --summer of 2011). The initial launch was followed by its first expansion: Rise of the Demons (see Rise of the Demons). Quarriors! Quarmageddon releases in June and is for two-four players ages 14 and up. The Quarriors! original game is required to play....

Dungeons & Dragons 5.0' in 2012

Mike Mearls (left) & Liz Schuh, Head of D&D licensing The long rumored and eagerly awaited new iteration of the original role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons is finally at hand, and Wizards of the Coast announced today that the company "will be looking to the legions of D&D fans to help shape the game along with us." The prototype of the new version will be unveiled at the D&D Experience convention in late January, where WotC will conduct a playtest of ideas currently in development. WotC will provide show attendees with a first-look draft of the new set of rules. Then starting sometime in the spring, WotC will begin open playtesting by releasing a growing set of rules, monsters, and other materials for player study and feedback. WotC is hoping to get feedback from fans and players of all previous editions of the game in order to mend D&D's fractured fanbase. Dungeons & Dragons, created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson in the early 1970s, is arguably one of the most influential games in history since it played a key role in the development of the entire modern gaming industry, including both paper and digital games. Yet even as its themes and tropes are reaching more people than ever through their adoption in popular online games like World of Warcraft and video games like Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the popularity of D&D itself has been declining. The release of Dungeons & Dragons 4.0 in 2008 split the fanbase as a sizable portion of the D&D fanbase rejected the new version claiming that it was "dumbed down" and like the online games it mimicked, emphasized killing too much while shifting away from the narrative and role-playing roots of D&D. Writing on the WotC Website, Mike Mearls, senior manager of D&D research and development, expressed his hope that the process will yield a "flexible" game that will allow the splintered D&D fanbase to reunite: "By involving you in this process, we can build a set of D&D rules that incorporates the wants and desires of D&D gamers around the world. We want to create a flexible game, rich with options for players and DMs to embrace or reject as they see fit, a game that brings D&D fans together rather than serves as one more category to splinter us apart." Will WotC's outreach effort be successful? Even though incorporating suggestions from a disparate fanbase could be a task akin to herding cats, it certainly looks like a very sound first step, as Greg Tito of The Escapist told the New York Times: "The long open testing period for the next edition, if handled correctly, could be exactly what's needed to make players feel invested in D&D again."...

Image from complaint--click for larger view. Wizards of the Coast filed suit in federal court today against businesses in four states that it alleges are selling counterfeit Magic: The Gathering cards. In its complaint, WotC says the defendants "...have repeatedly and unlawfully manufactured, marketed and distributed unauthorized reproductions of Magic trading cards." All four businesses, the complaint alleges, sold counterfeit cards and foil cards as "Proxy Cards," legal to use in DCI-sanctioned tournaments. There is a procedure for judges in tournaments to create Proxy Cards for cards that are too badly damaged to play, but that's typically done with a marker on another card. WotC posted a new summary of its rules regarding counterfeits and Proxy Cards on its site today. The four businesses named in the suit were scattered around the country and sold through a combination of their own e-commerce sites and postings on third-party sites. Wizards of the Coast engaged in secret shopper purchases of counterfeit cards from the businesses in recent months. The defendants in the case are: MagicProxies.com, a partnership of Lyndsy Redmore and Jamie Skeen of Carthage Tennessee TheProxyGuys.com, owned by Randy Christensen of Grand Rapids, Michigan MTGReplica, by Victoria Marticek of Ridgewood, New Jersey A BlindCat, by Frederick Carr of Puyallup, Washington The suit asks for a permanent injunction against selling counterfeit cards, plus direct and consequential damages, compensatory damages, fees and costs...

Cryptozoic Entertainment has announced the Spring 2012 release of Clash of Champions, a new deck-building game that will feature the characters and themes from the hugely popular World of Warcraft MMORPG. Cryptozoic, which publishes the popular World of Warcraft Trading Card Game, has expanded its license by creating a deck-building game, and Cryptozoic's President Cory Jones promises "to put our own spin" on the mechanics of the new deck-building game. Clash of Champions will include over 400 game cards, and will have a suggested retail price of $45.00. The new game will accommodate from two-to-four players, who begin the game with a small pool of cards that is expanded throughout the game play. Clash of Champions adds a role-playing element to the deck-building mechanics by allowing players to customize their iconic World of Warcraft characters with special abilities that help them fight off monsters and collect treasures....

Munchkin Axe Cop (Game)Publisher: Steve Jackson GamesRelease Date: October 2011 Number of Players: 3 to 6Playing Time: Approx. 60 minutesFormat: Box with cards and 6-sided dieAge Rating: 10 and upProduct #: 4401SJGICv2 Rating: 4 Stars out of 5A Dinosaur Warrior Baby kicks open a door, and encounters Dr. Stinky Head. In danger of losing to this villain, he asks for help from Avocado Cop, whose levels and abilities appear to turn the tide, until Telescope Gun Cop aids Dr. Stinky Head by providing him with A Truckful of Ninjas...No, really, that is a possible sequence of events in this Munchkin game variant. The basic Munchkin was a card game that played off of the clichés of dungeon-bashing in a role-playing game. Later versions have spun off into the genres of the wild west, gangsters, spies, horror movies and other variations. This time, though, the whole game is based on the Axe Cop webcomic. The comic is surreal and strange, since the stories are created by a child and illustrated by his much older brother. Oddly, that works well with the Munchkin rules and format. The mechanics are simple. You add your levels and your bonuses and compare them with those of a monster. Highest total wins. The play of cards in support of allies or to trip up opposing players makes it a fun but cutthroat game. Odd tricks and combinations can be used to win, or to prevent an opponent from winning, often making it difficult for the leading player to actually win. Skill, subtlety and wackiness are all on display in a typical game. The game box says 1-2 hours, but that's only because players will spend extra time laughing at the weird things happening, and trying to visualize the results. Because the whole game is compatible with other Munchkin games, players can mix decks in ways that make play even more surreal, but that may make their heads explode. Of course, that would fit right in with Munchkin Axe Cop.--Nick Smith: Librarian Technician, Community Services, for the Pasadena Public Library in California...

Wizards of the Coast plans to release the third Axis & Allies miniatures game in February 2012. The Axis & Allies Air Force Miniatures game re-creates air-to-air combat during World War II. The first series will include 30 different aircraft miniatures, including aircraft from every major nationality involved in the war. All minis come pre-painted and assembled. The models are 1:100 scale, making a typical model about 3.5 inches long. Each model will be mounted on a ball joint, allowing players to position the planes. The all-new game design uses a hex-grid playing board to regulate movement and combat. The focus is on fighter versus fighter combat. Some elements of the game will be familiar to fans of the earlier Axis & Allies Miniatures games, but the system is completely new. The durable plastic miniatures are designed for the new game, but may also be used with the Axis & Allies Army Miniatures Game. The Axis & Allies Air Force Miniatures starter will offer a fixed mix of aircraft, and includes all parts needed for two players....

This special edition will include not only the base game but also the "new buildings" and "nobles" expansions that were published separately from the original game in the Treasure Chest, a collection of expansions for seven games produced by Rio Grande Games and Alea released in 2009. No changes have been made to the game-play but there are many custom components in this edition such as metal doubloons in place of cardboard ones and colored wooden crates instead of the octagonal shaped resource tokens. All new artwork is included on the redesigned player boards, the VP tokens and ships. Even the cardboard has been thickened to almost 3 mm so the pieces have more weight and substance. All this will be packaged in a gold-embossed limited edition box that will retail for around $100. The first of these anniversary editions will be available at Spiel 2011 in Essen Germany from October 20th - 23rd. The English version will release in the U.S. in November....

Fantasy Flight Games has announced the May release of Olympus (MSRP $59.95), a sophisticated Euro-style strategy board game designed by Andrea Chiarvesio and Luca Iennaco and originally published by Stratelibri. Designed for 3-5 players ages 12 and up, Olympus is a strategy game based on worker-placement and resource management. The object of the game, which takes about 2 hours to play, is to score Victory points and gain dominance over the other city-states and control of the Peloponnesus. Each player in the game leads a different city-state in Ancient Greece (Athens, Corinth, Sparty, Thebes, Argos, etc.). Each city is defined by values (population, culture, military) and the productivity of its resources (grain, fish, venison). Each turn a player decides to send one of the city's three priests to worship one of ten different Deities. Since the Deities are specialized, praying to them can influence a city's values and production. Players can use the gods for their own mortal purposes to increase food production, create new buildings, or go to war. The deluxe Olympus game box (11.6" x 11.6" x 2.9") includes: a colorful Mount Olympus game board, five Polis boards, over 180 cards, a rulebook, and over 100 playing pieces. The game, which does not use dice, provides players with a number of potential winning strategies including resource gathering, building, and cultural development along with more aggressive options such as war and plague-spreading...

New 'World of Warcraft TCG' Expansion

Cryptozoic Entertainment has announced the July release of Twilight of the Dragons, the 15th expansion for the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game, which is based on Blizzard Entertainment's popular massively multiplayer online roleplaying game. After Deathwing emerged from Deepholm and wreaked havoc in Azeroth, "The Shattering" brought about widespread devastation across Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. Twilight of the Dragons concludes the "Cataclysm" theme of the previous Worldbreaker and War of the Elements Expansions. Twilight of the Dragons features the black and twilight dragonflights, led by the new master hero Deathwing himself. With this set WoW TCG players can take advantage of Deathwing's destructive nature by making sacrifices of allies, equipment, and abilities to take opponents down, triggering special effects as cards sent to the graveyard. Look for more details about the Twilight of the Dragons expansion to be released shortly. As always, this new expansion will give World of Warcraft TCG players the opportunity to acquire "Loot" cards that provide cosmetic upgrades for their online World of Warcraft characters-including non-combat pets and an exclusive mount....

'Battleship Galaxies' Board Game

In June Hasbro is releasing Battleship Galaxies: The Saturn Offensive (MSRP $65), a space combat miniatures board game that has relatively little in common with its Hasbro-produced namesake. The game involves a conflict between the human Intergalactic Space Navy (ISN) and the ships of an alien force known as the Wretcheridians. The opposing forces are represented by 20 highly-detailed starship miniatures of several different ship types, each with its own movement, shield, hull strength and weapons ratings—all of which are detailed on reference cards. The scenario-driven Battleship Galaxies board game was designed for between 2-4 players, ages 13 and up by Craig Van Ness, Colby Dauch, and Jerry Hawthorne. The scenarios determine the goal of the game and the initial set-up of the game board. For every turn players have a certain allotment of energy, which can be used either for movement or combat. Combat results are dice-driven. Players role two dice, one with letters and one with numbers. The resulting letter number combination is compared with the target ship’s reference card to determine the result. Hits on a ship are marked by the placement of colored pegs in the figures base—one of the game’s few oblique nods to the more simplistic Battleship game. Players can either take on the role of ISN officers defending an isolated settlement, or lead the attack as the commanders of the ruthless Wretcheridian attackers. Players have considerable flexibility in constructing their fleets, and they can also build up their deck of Tactics cards to add weapons and upgrade their ships. Battleship Galaxies includes a 48-page, full color graphic novel produced by IDW that details the backstory of this intergalactic combat. We asked both IDW and Hasbro for more information on the contents of this graphic novel, but neither responded with information in time for this article. In addition to the graphic novel, the Battleship Galaxies game includes: a game board, 20 plastic starship miniatures with bases, 24 ship cards, 2 screens with side supports, 2 coordinate dice, 35 blue pegs, 40 red pegs, 2 energy boards and markers, 72 tactics cards, 8 obstacle tiles, 8 discovery tiles, a victory point tile, rules, and 2 quick-reference cards....

Fantasy Flight Games has announced the third quarter release of Ventura, a sophisticated Euro-style board game designed by Alberto Mononcin and Silvio Negri-Clementi and set in Renaissance Italy during the 14th Century. Ventura is a territory-building game with a modular game board that accommodates from 2-4 players and takes about 60 minutes to play. Players represent noble families vying for economic leadership and territorial domination in an early Renaissance world dominated by city states. The noble houses used in the game, Este, Gonzaga, Medici, and Visconti are all ripped from the pages of history and come with their strengths and predilections taken right out of the history books. Players have to organize their armies, and lead them in battle, but it is necessary to use any acquired wealth judiciously since the best soldiers are also the most expensive. Gameplay unfolds over a series of rounds broken up into phases, with each player recruiting, annexing, expanding, conscripting, mobilizing and managing their troops before moving on to the next round....

TCG in late 2008, it took an injunction granted in federal court in 2009 to effect the change. Konami began selling new YGO products early in 2009, caught up to a normal schedule, built a robust organized play program, and has the title running as a strong #2 in sales in the U.S. 2. Wizards amps up MagicThrough a variety of strategies, including revamping its core sets to include new cards and adding vintage cards as a surprise in the Zendikar set, Wizards of the Coast has Magic: The Gathering at its highest sales levels in years. 3. NECA buys WizKidsAfter the collapse of an earlier deal, Topps was finally able to sell its WizKids division, which was shut down late in 2008, to NECA last summer. Hammer of Thor, the first HeroClix release from NECA, was released last fall and sold better than expectations despite a tough market for collectible games and the long delay between releases. 4. Board games continue growth With Settlers of Catan press hitting fad levels, a number of other strong franchise games, and fast-selling new games (e.g., Pandemic, Dominion, Small World) coming out at a rapid pace, the hobby boardgame category is growing steadily despite price points that some might think daunting. 5. Upper Deck gets Marvel licenseUpper Deck announced a deal with Marvel for both games and trading cards, with both types of products to include movie and TV images as well as comic art. 6. Wizards turns right on D&D downloadsWizards of the Coast made a sharp change of direction in April, ending legal sales of D&D PDFs and filing suit against eight individuals it accused of offering D&D Players Handbook 2 via filesharing sites. Two of the defendants settled for six figure amounts in the fall; other cases are still pending. 8. WizKids alumni form new companyA group of WizKids alumni launched Wells Expeditions and released their first game, Arcane Legions, in 2009. The game was designed by Jordan Weisman, Ethan Pasternack, and with help from others, and with designer firepower, anything can happen. 9. Fantasy Flight Games exits CCGsThe financial impact of the shutdowns of the UFS and Kingdom Hearts CCGs will not be great (after all, if they were selling that well they wouldn't be shut down), but they're indicative of a larger phenomenon that does have a big impact-the decline of collectible games. Only the strongest properties (e.g., Battle Spirits from Bandai) are coming to market and demonstrating staying power, as the recession crimps the buying power necessary for a serious CCG habit. 10.
Since launching the Wizards Play Network (WPN) as its new organized play program (see "Wizards Play Network"), Wizards of the Coast has registered over 138,500 active players for Magic: The Gathering (an "active player" is one who registered for a DCI-sanctioned tournament in the previous 12 months). The new system was put in place last June largely due to feedback from retailers and to streamline the tournament organization process using new digital technology and resources. "This record speaks volumes about the growth and health of our customer base and retail channel, and we can't thank our judges and organizers enough for their support," said Wizards of the Coast VP of Organized Play Chris Galvin. The new system added new formats to the list of officially recognized tournaments and places a greater emphasis on grassroots tournament organization. This shift in emphasis was a significant factor in WotC opening up Magic pre-release tournaments to brick-and-mortar retailers starting with the Shards of Alara pre-releases in October 2008 (see "WotC Opens Up Pre-Release Events")....

Upper Deck has announced that it will not be able to fill orders from hobby tournament stores for Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game Champion Packs. Upper Deck claims that "despite contractual obligations," Konami Digital Entertainment did not send the Champion Packs to Upper Deck for distribution to hobby stores. The Champion Packs, which were originally designated Tournament Packs, are issued at tournaments and often contain unique cards not found in any other set. Typically the Champion Packs mix tournament-tested cards with all new cards to create a highly desirable item for players and collectors. The lack of the latest round of Champion Packs is the latest example of the fallout from the legal dispute between Upper Deck and Konami, which announced last month that it was taking control of "all operational and business aspects of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG (see "Konami Takes Over YGO TCG"). Upper Deck filed suit in response to Konami's action and vowed to continue the Yu-Gi-Oh! organized play program (see "Upper Deck Plans to Continue YGO OP"). By not providing the Champion Packs it would appear that Konami is attempting to make it more difficult for Upper Deck to continue to support the YGO organized play program. In response to Konami's action Upper Deck issued a statement saying: "Upper Deck regrets that the Yu-Gi-Oh! community is being denied this product, but encourages players to continue to support their local hobby store."...
